First Words Initiative
The Laughing Monitos First Words Initiative uses the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP) to screen children aged 1-2 years. This tool assesses expressive and receptive language, social communication, and symbolic behavior through play-based observations and parent questionnaires. The process identifies each child's strengths and needs, guiding personalized goals and targeted interventions.
Speech and Language Screening
Using the results from the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP), personalized goals are created for each child in the Laughing Monitos First Words Initiative. This detailed assessment evaluates communication skills, including expressive and receptive language, social interaction, and symbolic behavior. Based on the findings, licensed speech pathologists and NCCU graduate students develop individualized goals tailored to each child’s strengths and needs. These goals guide targeted interventions that are monitored and adjusted throughout the program to support optimal communication development.
Goal Development
Our 8-week comprehensive speech and language development program for children aged 18 to 24 months consists of hands-on, interactive, communication-focused playgroups. In collaboration with UNC and NCCU student interns, it is designed to identify and address potential communication delays early.
Sessions are weekly for 1 hour for 8 weeks. We have two options available for English- and Spanish-speaking families.
